We heard it on the grapevine last week and today we’ve been picking the juicy fruit of a rumour come true – mobile network 3 has launched a new phone ripe with Skype branding. The 3 Skypephone is the first to feature a dedicated Skype button slap bang in the middle of the keypad for making free calls and sending free messages to other Skype users for when your standard GSM nattering is getting a bit too painful on the pocket. All you need do is take out a Mix & Match contract or top-up £10 a month on your pay-as-you-go account and the web calls will cost you absolutely nothing – nada, niente, zilch.Unfortunately 3’s generosity doesn’t stretch to all phone numbers, only to your Skype brethren, but it does work over 3G rather than Wi-Fi so there’s no need to seek out a hotspot every time you want to have a chat.Elsewhere the handset itself is pretty basic but it does pack a standard 2MP camera, MP3 player, expandable memory and A2DP Bluetooth for stereo cans.Keep those peepers locked to Stuff.tv for a hands-on video very soon.Essentials 3 Skypephone Price: from £free on contract On sale: 2 November Contact: 3 Related stories: 3 prepping Skype mobile?
