Welcome to the wonderful world of the internet teaser campaign. Once the preserve of Apple, the likes of Microsoft, Sony and others have since jumped onboard, drip-feeding us with cryptic messages, micro sites and tantalising glimpses of products.
The latest is Nikon, which is promising a 10.2 megapixel digital SLR in 17 days. We expect the 8th August will see the camera’s formal unveiling, as we’ve received an invite to a product launch on that date.
So, what do we know? Not a lot. Nikon says its new beastie will offer ‘more power, more control, more excitement’, and be ‘more versatile’ in to the bargain. On the camera co’s global site you can also see the silohuette of a Nikon D50/70.
Dozens of blogs have already noted the teaser campaign’s appearance, but so far no one claims any inside dirt on the new model. ByThom (link below) points out that it’s Nikon’s first foray in to online marketing hype, while most of the other discussion revolves around whether it’ll replace the existing D50 and D70 or sit alongside them. It’s certainly unlikely to suceed the D50, as that’s Nikon’s budget model.
Whatever, it’s whet our appetite, and could make for a respectable rival to Sony’s new Alpha and the currently unannounced Fuji S3 Pro, which logic suggests will launch before the year’s end.
