It can get tiresome seeing the same old mobile phone features. 5megapixel camera? Yawn. Fast HSDPA web connectivity? Go on then. Not once have we seen 'built-in keyboard' or ' doubles as harmonica' in a phone's spec list – until now.
Before you get too excited, the wonderful creations you see before you aren't just concepts, they're Japanese concepts, which makes them about as likely to hit UK shelves as NASA announcing plans to build a Death Star. But they're so brilliant we just had to bring them to your attention.
The series, called 'Band In My Pocket', is the result of a collaboration between Yamaha and au Design, and features six handsets. The specifics of the phones themselves have been gloriously overlooked in favour of designing them to morph into a mini piano, harmonica, drum sticks, a string instrument and a tiny trombone.
While some (Key to touch) seem like nothing more than flights of fancy, others (Trio in your hand, Box to Play) look like the logical progression of gadgets like the Tonium Pacemaker.
So, let's start a petition to get them made! Actually, let's just watch the videos at au Design's site and enjoy them for what they are – inspired nuggets of gadget joy that will never see the light of day outside the Far East.
