I’ve been trying to write this blog for the last two days, but every time I start, I fire up NEVES on my DS and get sidetracked. I’m playing it now. Hang on, I’ll just do this shape and I’ll be with you…

In the standard game mode you get 500 puzzles to be tackled in pretty much the order of your choosing, so if you get stuck on one you can always move on and come back to it later. There’s no time limit in this mode either, so you’re playing against yourself. Boffins will be buzzing through the puzzles in seconds, while others will like to take it at a more leisurely pace. It doesn’t really matter, because it’s just so satisfying flipping and dragging the shapes around with the stylus. The best thing is the little ripple of smugness that comes over you each time you complete a puzzle. “I’m actually quite clever” you think to yourself. The challenge can be increased by entering “7 Steps” mode, in which you get just seven moves to complete each puzzle. There’s also a wireless two-player challenge mode which (hooray!) only requires one player to have the game cartridge. So, the new Tetris? Well it’s the most fun I’ve had with a puzzle game since then.NEVES is out for Nintendo DS on 4 April.Horganator out.
