New Apple TV on the way?

New incarnation of little black box leaks in iOS 5 code. We're hoping for full 1080p playback

It looks like a new Apple TV is on the way, with hints of a major upgrade to the media reciever buried in the upcoming iOS 5 file system code.

Those intrepid sleuths at 9to5Mac have uncovered a listing for "AppleTV3,1" (the current incarnation is listed "AppleTV2,1"), suggesting that the little black box is due for an overhaul.

Since Apple's kitted out both the iPad 2 and the new iPhone 4S with A5 processor chips, it seems a safe bet that the Apple TV will be upgraded with the same dual-core processor - meaning it'll finally be capable of true 1080p video playback.

Much as we'd like to see the return of the old hard drive, it's pretty unlikely given Apple's commitment to AirPlay streaming.
