N-Gage finally arrives – for some

Nokia's been banging on about the revival of the N-Gage platform for ages, but so far all we've had is a sneak preview on some N-Series handsets. Then, back in December, we were told the beta version would be arriving within a week...

In fact it's been more like seven weeks. But hey, better late than never!

N-Gage First Access is the name of the dry run app. No longer do you need an actual N-Gage to play the mobile titles (so no revival of the 'side talking' craze then). Instead, N-series owners will be able to go online and peruse a host of N-Gage games to download.

Only N81 owners are able to install the software for now – although a little bird tells us that some enterprising Nokia users have already hacked the software and made it available for all N-Series devices.

On there you can find the usual arsenal of social gaming tools, such as public high scores and the chance to try out games before you buy. The launch titles are the blast 'em up Space Impact: Kappa Base, futuristic racing game System Rush: Evolution, and the (keep calm, now) fishing sim Hooked On: Creatures of the Deep.

Nokia's promising more as it builds up to the full launch. We're giving our thumbs a warm-up in readiness.
