At CES this year Bill Gates talked of a new era for the indecisive telly addict - Live.com TV recommendations. The new interactive service, which is currently in the pipeline, lets you rate the programs you watch via your Windows-based Media Center PC. The more stuff you rate, be it Neighbours or TimeWatch, the more personalized TV recommendations you’ll get.

Of course this could confront you with the disheartening truth that you’re a promiscuous viewer who’s happy watching any old crap, or it may just affirm what a discerning addict you are. Either way, once you get your personalized suggestions of what to watch you can then share them with your ‘community’ – bestowing your impeccable taste upon your less fortunate peers has never been easier.

Also in the oven is Live.com TV gadgets, which will let you manage your telly needs across different devices. This means you can touch base with your Media Center PC or Microsoft IPTV Edition-powered set-top box wherever you are. Forgot to set the proverbial video for Rock School before you went on holiday? You’ll be able to book to record it remotely, and see what your Media Center would have you watch if you were at home.

It’ll mean the Media Center can finally come of age – by doing a load of stuff you might actually find useful. Indeed, it’ll certainly seem all grown up when it’s bossing your viewing habits.

There’s no sign of a release date yet but we’ll let you know when the new Live.com services are ready for action.
