Microsoft to take the fight to Apple and Google with a 7in Surface tablet?
A cheaper, smaller Surface could be just the tablet to make Microsoft’s hardware venture a success

Microsoft is looking to take on the Apple iPad Mini and Google Nexus 7 with a 7in version of its Surface tablet.
According to the Wall Street Journal’s source, Microsoft wasn’t planning to launch a 7in Surface tablet last year, but is pressing ahead with plans to enter the mini-tablet marketin the face of the growing popularity of Apple and Google’s 7in slates. Since price was a major stumbling block for the Surface, a smaller, cheaper Surface could lead Microsoft down the path to silicon salvation.
While it’s still just a rumour at this stage, the idea of a 7in Windows 8 tablet with the build quality of Microsoft’s Surface and Surface Pro slates is mighty enticing – especially if it can match the sub-£200 price point of the Google Nexus 7.
