Microsoft iPod christened 'Zune'

The floodgates holding back details on Microsoft's iPod-killer have well and truly opened, with web whispers suggesting it’ll be called 'Zune' and won't play Xbox games in its first incarnation.

The news comes courtesy of tip-offs given to US sites Gizmodo and Engadget, with the latter even getting a credible image from its insider.

We still like our mock-up above, but the Xbox influence is likely to be toned down in the final design. Despite rumours to the contrary, there probably won't be a game menu or PSP-style controls.

This will leave the 'Zune' - previously thought to be called the Argo - to concentrate on bringing down the iPod juggernaut, with Windows Media Player 11 on-board and a screen that could stretch to huge 3.5 inches, allowing you to view album covers and notes while you listen.

As expected, there's no official word on the 'Zune' yet, but it could well reach UK shores in white and black guises in time for Christmas. Your move, Apple...
