Microsoft has no plans for its own phone

Release of Surface does not mean the company will start producing its own handsets, says executive

Apple, RIM and Google may have their own branded handsets for their respective OSes, but Microsoft won’t go down that path, according to a senior marketing manager for Windows Phone.

Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan told InformationWeek that, despite the recent announcement of the MS-branded and built Surface tablet, the firm has no plans to apply the same strategy to its smartphones – instead relying on handsets built by partner companies like Nokia, HTC and Huawei to drive Windows Phone 8 forward.

If Microsoft were to acquire Nokia, on the other hand – a scenario that, given the latter’s plummeting share price, is not inconceivable – then who knows?
