Hardly surprising, this. Bears still do their business in the woods, Popes continue to tick the 'Catholic' box on the census form and HD DVD remains very much dead. So Microsoft is swiftly dropping the defunct format.

It's said it'll no longer be making the add-on HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360. Don't fret if you already own one, however – it's still got your back with support.

So does this mean Microsoft was right not to build the player into the next-gen console, or is it the decision that lost the format war for HD DVD? We'll never know.

But what of the future? Will Microsoft take the Blu pill and switch sides with a Blu-ray-toting Xbox 360 or add-on drive? The official line is telling: "We will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high-definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room." Sound to us like downloads for now.
