While Blu-ray and HD DVD were slugging it out at CES, Meridian were busy showing the world what a few grand and some very clever engineering can still do with good old DVD.Evidently, it’s quite a lot. Hooked up by HDMI to a 42in plasma, the good folks from Meridian's Cambridgeshire HQ reckon the G95’s picture is even more luscious than some of the footage from the big boys' mass-produced hi-def boxes. It's all down to some seriously impressive upscaling algorithms that'll stretch lowly DVD to full 1080p – more than promised by any other one box. We're told this is not the same slack job done by some cheaper upscalers; which is just as well because some are decidedly ropey.Besides an incredible picture, the stackable box will also furnish your living room with a somewhat astounding 500W of 5.1 surround sound, spin CDs and DVD-Audio discs and it comes equipped with an FM/AM tuner or optional DAB radio.Sadly it probably costs more than the plasma it'll be attached to, but what price for minimalist beauty?
