We loved the fact that iPod docking stations came along and meant that we could watch our videos on TV screens and listen to our tunes on proper, man-size speakers. But we didn’t like the fact that we could only use the stations with specific brands. Boo.
Now Marantz have come along and spared us hassle and expense by releasing an iPod docking station which integrates your iPod with any home cinema, hi-fi system or PC. We feel spoilt for choice.
The IS201 generates its own on-screen display directly to your TV via S-Video, and the audio is controlled by its own remote handset, meaning you can control your iPod without a single turn of its click wheel. Or, if you want your iPod experience to stick to its computer roots, you can control it from your PC via an RS232 connection.
The dock can be connected to several different components simultaneously as it includes stereo phono, S-Video, RC-5, IR-Flasher input and RS-232 connections (see above left).
It’ll work with any iPod except the Shuffle and as an added bonus - so you can really relax and put your feet up - it even charges your Pod as it plays. Which is cool, since it saves faffing around plugging it in to your Mac or Media Center to ensure it stays juiced up.
The Marantz IS201 universal iPod docking station is available in June for a relatively reasonable £100.
