Our counselling hotline for gadgeteers who can’t afford an HD-ready LCD has been busy since our ‘Pimp your pad’ April issue, but we’ve come across a new treatment from Medion – its new sub-£600 flat-panel.

We’re not expecting Philips Ambilight visuals from the 32in MD 20099, but it does tick the two boxes you need to add your name to the Sky HD waiting list – an HDMI socket, and 1366x768 pixel, WXGA resolution.

This means it’ll only manage the 720p flavour of high-def with 1080i progs being downscaled, but that’s no reason to hide it in the spare room – the former is better for moving images such as sport, and higher res screens can struggle to upscale today’s analogue broadcasts.

With a suggested price of under £600 – we reckon this will mean £599 – it’s certainly an option for anyone coveting Sky HD, which will start its installations on May 22nd (story here).

Among its programming highlights will be ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ on Box Office HD, ‘24’ on Sky One HD and – our personal favourite – National Geographic’s ‘Face to Face with the Ice Bear’, which profiles John Prescott in his natural habitat.

The MD 20099, meanwhile, will be available from the end of May in Toys R Us stores – check out its website for more nearer the launch.
