We may sound like a bunch of grannies, but it has been cold this week. Pretty good timing then for Maplin to whip out some radiator-like articles of clothing.
The battery operated body warmer and water resistant gloves will heat up to a toasty 40 degrees in five minutes and, unbelievably given the arctic nature of these parts (OK, we exaggerate), it’s the first range of its kind to hit the UK.
Don’t worry, you won’t resemble a hot water tank. The sleeveless font zip up jacket is really quite lightweight with a heating system made not, as you might presume, from iron tubes filled with boiling water, but rather heating wires woven seamlessly into the fabric.
In fact, the body warmer manages to trouble the term ‘socially acceptable’. At the moment it only comes in yellow and black though, so if the wasp look isn’t quite your thing then you may want pull your hoody over it.
The range is geared up to outdoorsy types – snowboarders, climbers, trekkers and the like – and the zipper on the body warmer doubles as a compass. But it’s not just for the intrepid. We reckon it would come in handy for students skimping on heating bills, builders warming up their all too familiar backsides and, you have to admit, if it weren’t for the styling the body warmer would be a shuddering granny’s long-john dream.
The centrally heated body warmer will cost you £40 and the gloves a bargain £20. They’re available at over 100 stores across the UK, online here or by calling 0870 429 6000.
