Magellan unleashes a slew of eXplorist GPS devices

The Californian GPS company returns to the gloom of the UK with a host of handheld devices

Summer may be around the corner, but the lack of rain is no excuse not to get wet and muddy. Magellan hopes to ease your messy outdoor pursuits with its eXplorist range, consisting of the 510 (£300), 610 (£400) and 710 (£500). All feature 3in touchscreens, 3.2MP cameras and microphones to record notes and geo-referenced videos. Maps are good to go in Western Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, leaving very little patches of green earth that you won’t be able to navigate. The 610 and 710 also have a compass and barometric altometer, while the 710 boasts off-road and on-road topographic and city maps.

The eXplorist GC (£180), on the other hand, is a device born to geocache to your heart’s content, offering a pre-loaded set of popular geocaches as well as waypoint creation abilities.

Finally we have the TouchCase (£180) for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch, offering a case which endows your iDevice with rugged, waterproof (1m up to 30 minutes) capabilities, as well as increased GPS accuracy and a handy doubling-up of battery life.

All are available now, so choose your weapon of choice, chuck in a first aid kit or too, and let nature do its best.
