Hardly a day goes by without an app turning up that claims to let you "remix" your own music. Most of them are just toys, but this two-DVD set aims to teach budding producers the craft for real.

Here's a short trailer...

It's an ambitious project and a tough one to pitch. Everyone works in a different way, and there are limitless variations of hardware and software you might use to remix a track. These video tutorials are based around Logic Pro, and often get bogged down in technicalities that will be irrelevant to anyone using a different system, such as Ableton Live or Sonar. However, now and then it does drop a gem of a tip that'll be of value to just about anyone.

Disc 2 also contains the source audio files from the tutorials in WAV format, so you can try out the techniques for yourself regardless of what gear you're using. Overall it's rather hit-and-miss, with some very basic guidance rolled in with more advanced stuff, but if you're prepared to stick with it there's plenty to be learned. If your software of choice is Logic Pro, so much the better.

The Art of the Remix is out now, priced £61.
