Just because they could – 999 player FPS game sets world record

Call of Duty who? Forget sixteen player online multiplayer – in the future you'll be fighting shoulder to shoulder with thousands

This weekend saw 999 players come together in an laser-riddled mega battle to successfully break the world record for the highest number of players in a single online FPS game – take that, Modern Warfare 3.

Although just one person shy of its 1000 player goal, Swedish tech company MuchDifferent (creators of the Man vs Machine game) still more than proved the power of its Pikkotekk and UnityPark Suite gaming technology.

Impressively, the entire frag fest took place in browser windows, lending us hope for 1,000 player Battlefield and Call of Duty matches in the future. Spawn, run, shoot, die and repeat. Sound familiar?
