Icon – McLaren X-1

McLaren's Special Operations branch has been busy making a one-off supercar for one lucky owner, the X-1

Did this drive in from an episode of Thunderbirds?

FAB, isn't it? An anonymous customer approached McLaren with a request to build a one-off supercar. McLaren's Special Operations branch took on the job, which took nearly three years.

It doesn't look much like a McLaren...

It's based on McLaren's MP4-12C – but only the windscreen and windows are actually the same. The anonymous person who commissioned the car wanted something "timeless," and so from the custom interior to the carbon wings, it's all been crafted to the tastes of one rich customer. It's meant to embody the design of a number of cars, including a 1953 Chrysler D'Elegance Ghia and a 1959 Buick Electra.

It looks good – but does that bodywork weigh it down?

It features the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine found in the MP4-12C and the X-1 weighs roughly the same – even though it's 11cm longer and 19cm wider – so expect 616hp and the sort of speed that'll make you soil yourself. Not for the faint hearted.

Go on, tell us who owns it.

If we told you, we'd have to kill you. Seriously, we don't know who owns it as the buyer wishes to remain anonymous. Our guess is a real-life Bruce Wayne.

How much?

McLaren will make you a one-off beast like the X-1, but if you have to ask the cost, as they saying goes, you most certainly can't afford it.
