The world of hi-def welcomes a new channel to its family tonight as Channel 4 HD begins broadcasting at 6pm.

Unlike the BBC’s bespoke offering, the Channel 4 service will be a full simulcast of the standard Channel 4 schedule – although if you think that means hi-def 24/7 you’re going to be in for a letdown.

Channel 4 says a 'proportion’ of programmes will be in HD including Ugly Betty (with 5.1 surround sound, no less) and, by spring 2008, Hollyoaks. That means despite C4 HD beginning its life with The Simpsons at 6pm, the first HD programme will be Happy Gilmore at 10pm. Seems Channel 4 not-so-HD would be a better name.

Although Channel 4 HD will be free to view you’ll still need a Sky HD box to pick up its 1080i signals. but when Freesat arrives next year that should give you a second option. Let’s hope there’s more than just hi-def Hollyoaks to look forward to.
