Google is taking over the world. In between generating a gene catalogue for the human race and databasing the entire published work on the planet, it's managed to knock out a new beta version of Google Desktop. Probably while on a screen break.

Whatever – it's great news for disorganised lunks like me. My desktop resembles, well, the actual top of my desk, just minus the mould-cultivating coffee cups, but Google's Desktop 5 brings its intuitive search capabilities to my PC.

Once downloaded, you can perform desktop searches in the same way that you'd perform Google web searches. If you're looking for a Photoshop doc with "noodles" in the title, Desktop will display your search results within your regular Google browser, show you app icons and a small summary.

What's more, the sidebar looks slicker than ever, even sampling the colour of your wallpaper so that it fits seamlessly onto your desktop, while all manner of Google Gadgets can be customised 'til your heart's content.

Note to guys in the Googleplex: can you now please develop an app that can help me find my house keys...
