Google Wallet rival Project Oscar incoming?

Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere are planning a combined NFC mobile wallet effort

Google Wallet could soon have a major rival in the form of Project Oscar, a combined effort by Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere (Orange and T Mobile's new supercompany).

The proposed Project Oscar is a mobile wallet payment system which would work on any NFC phone containing one of the participating networks' SIM cards.

There are also plans for a loyalty card scheme, so using the technology could make it cheaper to buy your favourite products.

But don't run down to the shops brandishing your mobile just yet. Project Oscar needs approval from the European Commission and rival network Three is putting up a fight.

If Project Oscar is approved, we can expect it to go live later this year. Watch your back Google Wallet.
