Simple step-by-step website creation from the Google guys

Creating a personal website can still fill make many html-phobes break out in a cold sweat. First up, there's the design aspects, then what about anything fancy like forums, images and video... and what about the hosting and costs?

OK, there are plenty of simple website-in-a-box solutions, but Google has taken this a step further with the ludicrously simple Google Sites.

Initially starting life as a business tool, Google Sites has today been opened up to the public, and heralds a new era in simple online website creation.

First up, just select a name for your site – now, because Google are hosting, it will be proceeded by sites.google.com – but the big plus is that hosting is completely free.

You can then choose from a series of simple themes, and play around with font sizes, colours etc using a simple WSYWIG editor – there's not even a sniff of html.

New pages are created at the touch of a button, and you can choose from albums, spreadsheets, calendars and loads of other gadgets and even video (as long as its Google or YouTube). You can even alter user priviliges to decree who can use and upload to your site.

This has got to be the most ridiculously quick way to build a website – we managed to fashion our own test in less than 10 mins. OK, you won't not end up with the most sophisticated of sites, but for older (or younger) generations who want to share their club, project or family websites without a degree in programming, it's a perfect cold sweat-free solution.
