After wrong-footing everyone last year by announcing not an iPhone-rivalling gPhone but an open-source mobile platform called Android, Google and its partners have been showing off the first prototype handsets at this year's Mobile World Congress.
And the good news is that the finished phones could be here sooner than we thought. Google's mobile platforms manager, Rich Miner, has been telling us that he expects "one, two or three" Android-based phones to be out before the end of the year.
Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG are the main manufacturers signed up to the Android project – although LG has already announced early 2009 as a more likely date for its debut phone.
