Good riddance to camera self-timers

Ah, the joys of taking group shots with a self-timer. Pressing the button then dashing into position just after the shutter clicks, or waiting endlessly with a fixed smile while a small red light blinks its countdown.

No more! Not now that the face recognition boffins at FotoNation have come up with FaceTime. Once the FaceTime button is pressed, the camera counts up the number of beaming mugs in view, then waits for one more to join before snapping the shot.

Hopefully that'll be you, the photographer, rather than a passing stranger sitting down with your family.

There'll still be a small pause to give you time to compose your best toothy grin, but at least now you can take your time to arrive in position rather than leaping into place in a flustered pool of sweat.

It'll be on show at the Photo Marketing Association shindig in Las Vegas in a fortnight's time, and FotoNation reckon it could start appearing on cameras before the year is out. We'll be waiting.
