Skyrim's vast unscripted world full of dragons, beasts and engaging quests will enthrall you to the point you will want to do nothing else with your waking hours but play it. Fan-made mods and improvements from a devoted online community also mean that PC gamers will have more control over gameplay than their console-toting counterparts.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations


Take control of Ezio, Altair and Desmond in this latest thrilling chapter from the Assasin's Creed series which sees questions answered and enemies skewered as its gripping storyline artfully unfolds. Free-running through the rooftops of Ottoman Constantinople while dealing out death with hidden blades, swords and bombs has never been more fun. Not that we do it often, mind.

Battlefield 3


Battlefield 3 looks vastly superior to its console counterparts on a well-kitted gaming rig, which is just as well – bullet-riddled environments, explosions and collapsing buildings all deserve to look their very best after all. With a whole armoury of upgradeable weapons available for the different classes of soldier and a slew of vehicles with which to dish out destruction, Battlefield 3 more than holds its own against a certain other first person shooter.

For less than the cost of some iPhone apps, indie-developed Terraria has sold over a million copies and has won the heart of many a gamer with its polished 8-bit graphics, collectible items and Minecraft-like gameplay. Beating the likes of Portal 2 on its first week of release, it's a great option for those of you with aging PCs that can't keep up with the shiny polygon-packed shooters of today.

Portal 2


The combination of an enthralling storyline peppered with the wit of Steven Merchant's voice acting makes this sequel to the original Portal a must-buy for any self-respecting PC gamer. Brain-melting level designs and hilarious turret enemies make Portal 2 a fun, brain-melting puzzle game with a style all its own.
