It’s been three generations of Nintendo console since the Japanese gaming giant got us trigger-happy with a light-gun. Remember Duck Hunt on the NES with the red and grey futuristic pistol?
Or what about the SNES’s Superscope? That hulking jigsaw of plastic tubes, which made a cameo in the Super Mario Brother Movie.
So it’s about time we got one again, especially for the motion sensing Wii. And now we have – the Wii Zapper.
On paper: the greatest Wii idea since the silicone grip and super-strength strap. In practise: a new thing to get used to. Get your head round pointing the gun up slightly and it’s a blast. No pun intended.
On Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles it makes more sense than sleeping for eight hours a day – even if a thumb needs to be ready to hit the out-of-the-way ‘A’ button at any point. It’s like being in an arcade, minus the coin guzzling.
With Wii stalwart Wii Play, shooting ducks is about 64 per cent easier – depending on how good you were in the first place. We’re ace, so the Zapper made for a damn fine addition.
When it comes out tomorrow, you get a copy of Link's Crossbow Training to practise your Wii Zapper skills on. After that, all it needs is a little Time Crisis, maybe a House of the Dead or two, and a hint of Duck Hunt 2027.
