projectiondesign's bijou Model Two set the standard in awesome 720p picture quality but since then Sony and JVC have both come along with similar-price compacts in the form of the VPL-VW50 Pearl and DLA-HD1, which both pack 1080p.Now PD's returning with an internal refit - but still without the full-HD res. Instead it's relying on tried and trusted optics and a new secret weapon: Texas Instruments' BrilliantColor, which adds cyan, yellow and magenta to the usual red, green, blue colour wheel. The result is a serious improvement in colour saturation and smoothness that was enough to elicit several oohs and aahs at its Bristol Show debut in February.Tantalisingly, PD's also promising a 1080p version down the line and a fully-loaded three chip 1080p model after that. We warn you though, if three and a half grand’s already too much for you, you’re not going to like the price tags on those two.
