Earlier this month saw the launch of a new international racing series for 2009. The Hydrogen Electric Racing Federation (or HERF to its friends) will feature some of the world's top car manufacturers competing F1-style with hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric cars.Ever eager to be up on the latest technology we've spied this DIY kit designed to explore some of the fundamentals. The H-racer is a real hydrogen-fuelled racing car that you build yourself. After overcoming our initial disappointment at discovering it was only a toy car, it seems this kit really works.Slot the hydrogen storage tank (or 'balloon'), fuel cell system and electric motor into the sleek silver and perspex body and you're ready to fill up with hydrogen from the battery or solar powered charging station (just add water). The makers claim you can get up to three or four minutes running time with a single charge. Which leaves only one problem - there's no way of steering it.
