The future wheelie frightens me

I’m scared. Scared that in the future we’ll all be driving around in compost-fuelled wheelbarrows, with 0-60mph times of three weeks and top speeds that could be beaten by a lame tortoise. Hopefully, I’m just being paranoid and all future cars will look as cool as this Toyota hybrid concept.

The FT-HS was recently unveiled across the pond at the Detroit Motor Show. On paper, the specs look pretty tasty: a 3.5L, V6, hybrid electric engine that’s capable of producing a sizeable 400bhp. If it ever makes production and ends up strutting its stuff on UK streets you’ll be looking at around £30,000.

It looks awesome, but the striking design isn’t just about getting you all hot under the collar. The FT-HS features hard-edged ‘Aero-Corners’ to allow smoother airflow around its body, a scooped out roof to reduce drag and a carbon fibre Kevlar retractable roof plus retractable spoiler.

And, with any luck, it’ll be a modern-day version of the company’s awesome Supra sports car. You like? Well check out the FT-HS and other funky concept cars in the March issue of Stuff, on sale 1st Feb.
