Firebox has just started selling an extremely useful new gizmo that allows any homephone to make cheap internet calls.

The UConnect works with our favourite internet call software, Skype, which means free chats to other Skype users and miser-friendly global call rates.

One end of the device plugs into a spare USB port on your computer - which needs to be switched on for you to make and receive calls - and the other connects to the standard cable on your homephone. It'll support any wireless DECT handsets, freeing you from having Skype conversations while sat at your PC (the Cordless Dual Phone does a similar job).

As you'd hope, the UConnect supports normal Skype-to-Skype calls, SkypeOut (calls to normal landlines and mobiles) and SkypeIn (standard incoming calls).

The only bummer is that you have to tap in the international 0044 dialing code on your phone every time you dial.

It's on sale for £35 next week over at Firebox.
