Gadget of the Day: Philips GoGear SA1300

It can’t be long ‘til Apple updates the Shuffle – there’s now a whole army of similarly priced flash MP3 players that allow you to lead your musical life in a less random fashion, thanks to their little screens.

The latest is Philips’ SA1300, and its mini display is a 128x64 pixel OLED number.

It’s PlaysForSure certified, allowing you to use music store and subscription WMA tracks downloaded to your PC (it doesn’t like Macs). It also enjoys MP3s and WAV files, and has a voice recorder so you can document your own warblings. The battery life is a respectable, if uninspiring, 12 hours.

There are two versions: the 512MB-toting SA1300, and the 1GB SA1330. Both look nice and shiny in their classy black finishes.

Head here for more info; online prices range from about £60 for the SA1300 (pictured) and £80 for the SA1330.

28/06/06 update: we've updated these prices following info from Philips.
