Facebook adds verified accounts and nicknames for celebs

The social network plans to take on Twitter with the help of the glitterati

Facebook looks set to pander to its celebrity users a little more, with the social network planning to launch verified accounts for famous and public figures. Celebs can apply for a verified account – just like on Twitter and Google+ – and if enough people already subscribe to them, they should make the cut.

Once famous people have gone to the trouble of submitting official ID documents, they will appear more frequently in the 'People to subscribe to' feed, taking a leaf out of Twitter's book and probably stealing even more of our online attention. And famous folks will also be able to create accounts under nicknames or stage names – unlike the rest of us.

Facebook also looks set to launch the new Timeline on brand Pages at the end of February – even though the new Profile design still seems to be optional for individual users at the moment. And companies with a Facebook page won't be forced to make the leap as it will kick off as a limited access beta.
