We love Asus's cheap as chips EeePC, but it's just been undercut by this – the £100 Elonex One.

Due to be launched at The Education Show in Birmingham at the end of this month, it's aimed, appropriately enough, at school kids. Not that penny-pinching gadget fans need be put off by that.

It comes loaded with a 1GB or 2GB of storage and built-in Wi-Fi (plus Bluetooth on the 2GB version) for web browsing or music streaming. As you'd expect, it relies on Linux and open source software, rather than any of Microsoft's offerings, with an office suite, media player and a smattering of games all waiting on board.

The pièce de résistance is the 7in screen which fully detaches to go 'tablet' - although we're told there's no touchscreen, which should make navigation interesting.

We'll learn more on the 28th when it's fully launched. Go easy on the beers 'til then and you'll have saved enough to buy one.
