Undaunted by its recent purchase of gaming PC specialists Alienware, Dell has used its own XPS gaming brand to launch a new high-end laptop aimed at LAN party animals.
The XPS M1710 has the top-end Intel Core Duo processor running at 2.16GHz, plus 2GB of high-speed RAM and a top-of-the-range Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 with 512MB of video memory. Which should ensure that every gamer has a Doom 3 frame-rate that’s higher than his IQ.
These red-hot specs make the M1710 the fastest consumer laptop ever made by Dell – and quite probably anyone else. Which will reassure the Windows faithful who were recently outraged by reports that Apple’s MacBook Pro runs XP faster than any dedicated Windows laptop [blog here].
Added value comes from a 100GB hard drive, 17in screen, DVD recorder and every flavour of Wi-Fi known to man. But surely the best feature has to be the adjustable sidelights that give the whole laptop an eerie glow – perfect for those midnight fragging sessions when you can’t remember where you left the beer. A fully glowing version is also available, but sadly only in North America.
The US price is quoted as $4155 for the full spec, while a UK price is currently unavailable. You can find out more at Dell’s site.
One thing Dell forgot, however, was a decent name. You’d have thought they’d have learned from the influx of funky gamers from Alienware that cool names like ‘Area 51’ really get the public going. Which is why we’ve decided to call the M1710 ‘Mightio’. There, that wasn’t hard, was it?
