There have been rumours a-circling for a while about Dell muscling in on the lucrative smartphone market, but details have been thin on the ground until now.

A recent Wall Street Journal report claims to have spoken to engineers working on the project and reveal there are two models in the offing.

One has a iPhone-esque touch screen, while the other sports a slide out QWERTY keypad. The computer giant is still mulling over whether to go with Android or Windows Mobile.

If Dell’s boffins are taking their time, it’s understandable. The Axim range of PDAs (pictured) were quietly retired in 2005 after popularity waned. But this time, if they get it right, we could see a genuinely threatening competitor to Blackberry.
