Rumours have been flying this week that Currys, like Woolworths, has stopped selling HD DVD players – yet another blow to the ailing format, if true.

Sure enough, a quick search of Currys' website and that of its sibling, Dixons, reveals three HD spinners on offer, all of them Blu-ray.

So is this the end for HD DVD at the UK's biggest electrical retailer? "No," says a Currys spokesperson, who told us that the disappearance is merely down to stock shortages and that HD DVD will be reappearing in due course.

It's also furnished us with the results of a recent non-scientific survey on Dixons.co.uk, showing a near even 53:47 split between Blu-ray and HD DVD as the format of customer choice.

"Whichever way it goes, half of customers will be disappointed," the spokesperson says, before tellingly adding: "For the sake of our customers we hope the decision will come soon."

Just how soon will partially be up to Currys and Dixons...
