The MWC phone party is over. But don’t feel down – there’s another one for digicams in less than two weeks at PMA, and to pique your interest Canon has announced six spanking new cameras.
Leading the pack is the 12MP Powershot SX200, which has a mighty impressive 12x optical zoom with wide-angle lens. If you tire of taking sweeping panoramics, it can also take 720p video, which you can play back on your flatscreen via the HDMI connection.
Its fellow new Powershot, the 12MP D10, lacks the zoom, but makes up for it with ruggedness. It’s waterproof to 10m, can be dropped from 1.2m and laughs in the face of dust, making it a formidable new competitor for Olympus’ new Mju Tough 8000.
Slightly more squeamish but significantly more attractive are Canon’s four new Ixus snappers. The 12MP Ixus 100IS is its slimmest compact yet at 18.4mm, and packs a solid feature set including 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilization and the ability to record HD video.
Its sibling, the 110 IS, is more portly, but has a 28mm wide-angle lens with 4x optical zoom and a 2.8in ‘PureColor’ LCD. If you’re after a little more zoom the 12MP 990 IS comes with a 5x optical lens, while the 95 IS is the most wallet-friendly, bringing a 10MP sensor and 3x optical zoom to the financially challenged.
