If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, which is exactly what Universal's done. The studio has just announced that its back catalogue of HD DVD releases will now be coming out on Blu-ray.

Owners of Blu-ray players will soon be able to enjoy the high-def delights of the Bourne trilogy, Transformers and (cough) Mr Bean's Holiday for the first time.

That just leaves Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation– with the likes of Shrek, Beowulf and Dodgeball-on-ice flick Blades of Glory – still on board the sinking ship, although surely only a matter of time before they jump.

Universal's announcement also applies to future releases such as the upcoming Borat follow-up, Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt. So look out for that one. Kind of hard to miss, really.
