Oh BMW, what a tease you are. You’ve posted a flash video of a gadget that apparently plays MP3s and DVDs, but won’t tell us any more ‘til mid-January. Well, that won’t stop us donning our eerily accurate guessing hat and working it out ourselves. The trailer (see link below) proclaims that the device – which is shown to morph into various different shapes in a manner T-1000 would be proud of – is something of a multimedia genius. Alongside support for MP3s, DVDs and CDs, it apparently has USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a colour LCD and voice recognition. So what’s BMW gone and concocted? The best bet is that it’s the new version of iDrive, which currently lets Beemer owners control their audio system, air con and navigation via a six-way shifter. Adding features like voice recognition to a system that’s been labelled ‘iDistract’ by hilarious detractors seems like a good step.Alternatively, the mock-ups seem to suggest that a portable gizmo that could be used away from your beloved motor, but we’d be amazed if BMW has dipped its toe into the overcrowded MP3 player market. More likely is the suggestion that it’s some sort of videophone. BMW is keeping schtum ‘til an official announcement in a couple of weeks – we’ll let you know the minute its cover is whipped off.
