As anyone with a Bluetooth watch will know (anyone?), the gubbins required to make it work isn't exactly what you'd call slim - not by today's anorexic gadget standards anyway. Nokia's Wibree could well be the answer - it's a wireless radio standard that's similar to Bluetooth, but designed to work alongside it rather than instead of it. Wibree runs at a so-so 1Mbps, but consumes about a third of the power, meaning wafer-thin devices such as this mobile (pictured), or tiny 'are they talking to themselves?' earpieces.  We're really not being sarcastic when we say we can hardly wait…
