Halo 3 may be the number one game on Xbox 360 owners' wishlists, but another RPG shooter may give the Master Chief a nasty surprise this year – the innovative and visually spectacular Mass Effect.

The sheer 'wow' factor of Bioware’s new game can’t be overstated. Like its predecessor, Knights of the Old Republic, it lets you navigate its huge universe as you please and build a reputation – good or bad – by choosing responses to what people say.

In action, it’s breathtaking: the graphics are simply unbelievable, and hitting the button to interrupt someone rudely, watching your character stick a gun into their face mid-conversation is something totally new in gameland.

Like a certain other Xbox 360 shooter, it’s also part of a planned trilogy, which will see you take control of the intimidatingly-named Master Shephard through increasingly vast worlds. See you in 2183...
