The excitement of giving its Transporter streamer its UK bow has clearly got to Slim Devices - it's handing out a free Squeezebox, worth £250, to anyone who buys one at the Best of Stuff show.Unless you're tax-dodging builder, you're unlikely to have the necessary cash in your wallet - the Transporter costs a wince-inducing £1300. Still, pop along to the Margaux Suite for a demo and you might just be persuaded to trade the dog in for one.Hotel bluesThe good news about the demo is that Slim's staff have got the world's most capable streamer hooked up to some excellent Meridian speakers, with the Transporter acting as a pre-amp and streaming music via Wi-FI from an Apple laptop. The bad news is that said music is Chris Isaac. It is, nevertheless, difficult not to be mighty impressed by the clarity and well-rounded recreation of the emo-drip's wails, which is largely thanks to the streamer's so-called 'Miracle DAC' and some 'Super Regulators' for minimising noise. As you'd hope from something that costs the same as an HD plasma, the unit also looks fantastic with an aluminium finish and grayscale display. Well, your dog would want you to have it.
