Splashtop THD £4.44

Not just a remote desktop control app, Splashtop THD needs some Tegra 3 quad-core power and Ice Cream Sandwich oomph on your Android tablet to get going. Armed with that, you can stream hi-res video from your desktop over Wi-Fi and 3G – and play games like Skyrim on your tab, with customised controls. One very cool app.

ARnav beta £Free

This AR app will point out landmarks or points of interest in the distance, let you know how far away you are and how to get there with handy arrows and annotations. Could be handy on our next city break – and we're looking forward to seeing this kind of thing in AR glasses before long.

Funny or Die £Free

Fresh, featured and very silly videos populate this free app that'll eat up a few minutes of your morning commute. Search popular vids and Funny or Die's archives with a few taps. It might not be clever but then we don't always need it to be.

TED £Free

On the other hand, TED is a very clever app. Too clever by half, some might say – but the TED conferences are bursting with interesting ideas, inventors and businesspeople, so it's worth sitting through the odd cringe-worthy dose of shiny optimism. Get a quick video or audio fix on anything from SOPA to life-saving design.
