... as FIFA 08 misses the target by the narrowest of margins. In November I made a prediction that EA's FIFA 08 would be the best-selling game in the UK this Christmas. I was wrong, but only by a paltry 1000 sales.

At the time, the bookmakers' favourite was Need For Speed Pro Street, based on the franchise's past form of Christmas number one spots. I suspected the series was running out of gas, and so it proved to be, slipping down to number five as FIFA surged up to number two.

But it was Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed that took the honours – quite a feat for an original game. The previous week saw Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ruling the roost, which has since dropped to number three. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was in pole position two weeks ago, but that has since disappeared completely from the Chart Track Top 40, no doubt a casualty of those chronic Wii hardware shortages. Here's the top ten all-formats UK games chart for the week ending 29 December 2007:

1. Assassin’s Creed2. FIFA 083. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare4. The Simpsons Game 5. Need for Speed: ProStreet6. Pro Evolution Soccer 20087. WWE Smackdown vs Raw8. More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock10. The Golden Compass

I'll get it right next year. Promise.

Horganator out.
