Archos has been making PMPs since the dawn of the iPod age, but while its fruity foes have lapped up the praise, it’s remained in the shadows. True gadgeteers have appreciated its kit, but the mass market has remained unmoved. Generation 5 is its attempt to make a move into the mainstream with the range featuring WiFi for content streaming and Flash support to cater for Youtube addicts. The 605 WiFi (pictured) heads up the charge. It’s a 15mm thick, WiFi enabled PMP with a 4.3in touchscreen. It’ll be available in 4GB, 30GB and 160GB versions. Its cheaper little brother, the 405, flaunts a 2GB Flash memory with a SD slot for expansion and a 3.5in screen. Both should be flying from the shelves to your hands by August. As with earlier versions, the 605 can be used with a DVR dock to record directly from your TV. But there are other means of chowing down on some steaming hot content. Archos is launching its own content portal and the Archos TV Plus, a standalone DVR with a dock for your PMP. Out later in the year, it’ll also include HDMI, RGB, WiFi and Ethernet compatability.
