Apple updates: how soon is too soon?

So Apple upgraded the iPod Touch and iPhone this week – good news for those who perhaps hadn’t made up their mind over which to get but bad news for early adopters like me.I picked up a 16GB Touch from the States back in November last year and I love it. I use it mainly for watching TV programmes on my way to work. I’ve always agreed that it’s not capacious enough for music, let alone movies as well, so I made the most of the exchange rate and picked up an 80GB Classic too.Now I’m well aware most people won’t be in a position like me (for starters their credit card bills will be much smaller) and will have good cause to feel pretty annoyed by Apple’s eagerness to update. Barely four months have passed since the launch of the Touch and three months since the iPhone and now two flagship products have already been succeeded by higher capacity models. Way to keep your hardcore fans happy, Apple. Not only that but new iPod Touch buyers will find their multi-touch marvel comes complete with the new upgraded software and apps absolutely free. I, on the other hand, will have to shell out £13 for it as a punishment for being too keen. Doesn’t seem quite right, does it?

The annoying thing is they're all fantastic products but while this trend of updating so quickly continues, how long will it be before we're all too scared to buy Apple in case something better comes along a few months later? Watch out MacBook Air buyers – the dual USB model could be right around the corner…
