Things are getting stranger and stranger in the world of Mac rumours, as Gizmodo has uncovered a new Apple patent for a laptop docking station that looks like an iMac - and seems like an ideal fit for an ultraportable MacBook.

It seems like a strange move for Apple to file a patent that scuppers a Macworld announcement, so it's worth being a little sceptical here. Apple does, after all, patent a lot of ideas that never see the light of day.

Nonetheless, it's a cool idea that could be the ideal solution for those of us who want the big screen luxury of an iMac at home, but the portability of a laptop on the move. On the other hand, it means Apple sells one computer instead of two. So don't expect it to be cheap, if it does ever appear.

Oh, and if it is indeed a dock for the ultraportable MacBook, then it proves that said MacBook will have an internal optical drive after all, as you can see from the diagram below and the rather dry text of the patent.
