The Apple iPhone 5 is here!

Apple unveils its latest iPhone – complete with 4in screen, new Lightning dock connector and iOS 6

It’s here – after months of speculation and rumour, Apple has unveiled the iPhone 5 at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

The iPhone 5 arrives packing a 4in screen with that 326ppi Retina Display. But in spite of packing in that Retina Display plus an A6 processor that’s twice as powerful as its A5 predecessor, 4G LTE connectivity and 8 hours of web browing battery life, it’s smaller. The iPhone 5’s aluminium and glass build has been sized down by 20 per cent in weight to 112g and by 11 percent in thickness to 7.6mm. There will be a white version with a raw aluminium back and a black one with a black anodised backing.

What about the camera? That’s an evolutionary, not revolutionary, change – an 8MP, f2.2 iSight snapper in the back with a 720p front-facing cam too. Software enhancements like better stabilisation should help show an improvement over the 4S – plus there’s a new Panorama photo mode.

Lastly there’s a new, smaller 8-pin Lightning dock connector port and cable for easier plugging in. It will mean a host of new docks and speakers on the way, as well as an adapter for your now old docks – which will likely come at an extra cost.

The iPhone 5 hits the UK on September 21st – and if you want to take advantage of its LTE connectivity, you’ll have to switch over to EE; for the time being they have the exclusive on UK 4G. For the latest info on the launch, follow our liveblog here.
