Sure, editing text tones has been an option on most handsets for years, but Apple likes to be different. Even customising your iPhone ringtone requires a trip to GarageBand. So as iOS 5 adapts to incorporate the best bits from Android and its ilk, so too does it incorporate the tone editing options of other handsets. Not only can you change your text tones but most others too including voicemail alerts, email, calender, tweets and reminders. An attempt to dissuade jail-breakers from hacking their handsets? Too little too late for that, Steve, but a welcome update we hope makes it off the Beta 3 version into the final release.
